Concerning Constipation

Sometimes it really seems like at least half of America is constipated! I think we can blame bread, pasta, sitting for 8 hours or more a day, not drinking enough water, not exercising, and not eating enough fiber in the form of vegetables.

As a raw vegan eating too much dehydrated food can cause constipation. As you’ve probably noticed, your stools don’t come out dry. So when you eat dry foods, your digestive system steals water from your body to rehydrate the food so it can pass relatively painlessly out of your colon.

The solution for this is obviously to avoid dehydrated food, opting for fresh foods like fruits and vegetables which have a naturally high water content.

But once in a while even someone on The Garden Diet Programs can experience constipation when they first start eating raw.

When your body starts to detox it cleans out wastes it didn’t have time to deal with on a cooked diet, and if ones intestinal health is not ideal then those wastes can accumulate in the colon and you can get stopped up.

When this happens it can be helpful to substitute fiber-rich green smoothies for the fruit juices and vegetable juices on the program. The benefits of juices are the smooth texture and the quick and easy absorption of an abundance of nutrients.

However, if constipation is an issue, the benefits of smoothies will outweigh the benefits of juices. Here’s a simple, fun 2 minute how-to video for a simple green smoothie recipe. If you prefer, you can just eat vegetables and fruits and get the fiber that way!

Eating as much fruit as you like for breakfast and through the morning and then a big salad for lunch and/or dinner will give you ample fiber.

Adding one of our nut and vegetable based recipes for your other meal will give you added fiber plus essential fatty acids and abundant protein from the nuts.

A Balanced Raw Diet will quickly lead to regular, easy bowel movements.

There is a vegetable juice recipe however that is known to cure constipation in a hurry. This is 1/2 a bunch of spinach to 1-2 bunches of carrots. You can increase to 1 bunch of spinach and 2-3 bunches carrots over a few days. Spinach, like beets, contains oxalic acid which although amazing for promoting peristaltic motion can be a little hard on the stomach when you are not used to it.

Doing this juice 1-3 times a day you should experience relief from constipation within two or three days, if not instantly.

Would appreciate your help with this question. I’m a 41 year old black male, and I’ve had a bloated / distended stomache for around a decade now, which seemed to happen almost overnight. there was no trauma or anything else that I can identify that may have triggered this off. Also, I have very rarely experienced any constipation, as I have regular stools, sometimes between4-6 timer a day. Been to doctors, colonics etc. and even went raw for 3 straight months, but my stomache has’nt budged. There is no pain or discomfort, but the main symptom seems to be constant fatigue throughout the day. Usually beginning around 10-11am. This is problematic as I am active person, as I teach dance, self-defense and other related activities. And I no longer have the energy levels to do these things. I don’t drink, smoke either and I am a vegan, although there is lot’s of room to improve in my diet. I’ve tried medicinal herbs as well, but I am completely out of ideas as to what this condition could be. Prior to this distention, I actually used to have a natural concave stomach genetically. I would like to know if you have come across or treated this type of condition in your work with raw clients? keep up the great work.

    All the best

I wonder if it might be candida, the mold that eating concentrated grains like bread and pasta can cause in our system, leading to things like bloating and fatigue, yeast infections and skin conditions. It took me a year of 100% raw with no raw cacao and no MSG (this included avoiding Nutritional Yeast, Braggs Liquid Aminos and all other liquid aminos, Nama Shoyu, all the types of Miso, Soy Sauce, Teriyaki Sauce, etc, as all these are concentrated flavor-enhancers acting similarly to MSG upon us). Also no dehydrated foods. Just fresh, raw, organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouts, greens, and germinated legumes. And I did continue to use olive oil, celtic sea salt, and honey. I hope this helps!
